Good News

Hey blogarazzi,

Been a fortnight since I've written and was prepared to post photos from Ben's and my trip up north to Lofoten with his dad, Tim...

...but, well, our camera ran out of batteries a and b, there is no light in Lofoten. Not entirely true. There is some light from about ten until two every day. We were in two places: in a little town about an hour from Narvik, where Ben and Tim attempted to snorkel with killer whales (unsuccessful) and then in the town of Svolvaer, which looks like this in the summer, forgive the stolen thumbnails:

In winter I suppose it looked like this, BUT WE COULDN'T SEE IT. Ha ha ha ha ha.

Actually it was lovely, cold and snowy and kind of magical. Of course, the snow meant we never witnessed the Northern Lights and got to scatter Samm's ashes underneath them, which was a disappointment.

We did, however, see a moose tramping around in the snow! He was just right. We also saw an eagle.

I'm starving so I'll make this fast: good news! Today I got offered a great job teaching at Berg Vidergaende Skole, one of the top high schools in Norway. They have an International Baccalaureate program there, and I'll be teaching an English class in that program, as well as another English course in the mainstream system. It's counted as 65% time, perfect perfect. The contract will be definite for a month but I was told on the downlow that the person I'm covering for will most likely be gone the whole school year. I'll be planning and working with my new friend Stine Pernille Raustøl, who is a bundle of energy and ideas, reminds me of my friend Annie Meckstroth from Davis, California--except Stine is into lit, not science.

I also got offered two other classes here in Oslo. Yes friends, I am finally gainfully employed. More so than usual, even!

More soon,

Susie

By the way...

A piece from my travel memoir/love story/tell-all exposé was published in three parts by the Santa Fe Writer's Project. It's called "In Huaraz," and if you're interested you can catch it here: http://sfwp.org/

Enjoy!
